Referees

Referees of Journal of Communication Studies (JCS) are the academic experts of the field of communication and media studies and other related disciplines such as politics, history, sociology, and cultural studies, etc. The academic referees for each issue of JCS change depend on the main theme of the journal and the expertise area of the referee. Referees evaluate the academic writings of authors based on several criteria (such as type, methodology, bibliography of the article) and write a report for each article (including suggestions for improvement if necessary).

The Process of Evaluation

Each article is first screened by the editorial board for their relevance with the main theme of the issue to be published. The appropriate works are sent to three referees depend on their area of academic work and interest with an evaluation form. Identities of the authors and the other referees are not known by the referees, which mean they do not act as a committee. Evaluations usually include an explicit recommendation of what to do with the manuscript or proposal. Typically, the author eventually sees most of the referees’ comments as well to be able to fit the basic requirements of the journal and improve their work. After the evaluation there can be following consequences:

  1. The unconditional acceptance of the manuscript or proposal
  2. Acceptance of it in the event that its authors improve it in certain ways
  3. Rejection of it, but encourage revision and invite resubmission
  4. Rejection of it outright.

When two out of three referees find the article sufficient enough to be published the author is informed on the results of the evaluation and the suggestions are delivered to the author for improvement.

Recruiting referees

Recruiting referees is a political art, because referees are not paid, and reviewing takes time away from the referee's main activities, such as his or her own research. Editors are at a special advantage in recruiting a scholar when they have overseen the publication of his or her work, or if the scholar is one who hopes to submit manuscripts to that editor's publication in the future.
