EDUCATION AT THE ENGLISH PREPARATORY SCHOOL
The medium of instruction at Yeditepe University is English. An English exemption exam is held prior to the beginning of every academic year, in accordance with the date, time and venue announced by the Rector's office. Students who score the specified minimum scores in the international language assessment exams below are considered exempt from the English Preparatory Programme:

Students who want to submit a TOEFL score are expected to take the exam at the following institutions:
Boğaziçi University
American Culture Association, ISTANBUL
Turkish-American Association, ANKARA
Exam results from other institutions are not accepted.
Those students who take the TOEFL exam are required to enter 7050, the TOEFL institution code for Yeditepe University, for direct reporting of scores to the English Preparatory School. TOEFL scores that are not sent directly to Yeditepe University Preparatory School by the TOEFL Administration will not be accepted as valid.
Students who do not provide valid documents that report the minimum accepted scores by the university are required to take the English Proficiency Test administered by the English Preparatory School. (Please click for sample exam)
Students who score a minimum of 60 out of 100 are considered exempt from the English Preparatory year. Students who have not achieved the specified minimum score on the proficiency exam are required to attend the English Preparatory School. The duration of the English Preparatory Programme is at the most 2 academic years.
An optional summer term is provided for students who wish to carry on their studies during the summer. Students who have completed the English Preparatory Programme but have not been successful in the proficiency exam are entitled to take the exam again.
The English Preparatory Programme is made up of two academic terms: The first (fall) semester (October-February) and the second(spring) semester (February-June). In addition, the Preparatory School offers an optional 8-week summer term. Students who are assigned to Level C in the Level Assessment Exam can pass on to their departments provided that they are successful at the end of the summer term offered by the Preparatory School.
Levels at the Preparatory School:
The English Preparatory School consists of three levels: C, B and A.
Level A:
Students who are placed at level A study for one term. Students who achieve the required GPA at the end of the term go on to their faculties. They repeat the same level if the required GPA is not achieved.
Level B:
Students who are placed at level B study for two terms. They pass on to level A provided that they achieve the required GPA. If not, they repeat the same level.
Level C:
Students who are placed at level C study for three terms. They pass on to level B provided that they achieve the required GPA. If not, they repeat the same level.
Level A consists of 15 hours of academic reading and writing skills per week. In addition, there are 12 hours of ESP classes per week, which include note taking and listening skills in the students' specific fields of study.
Level B is made up of 15 hours of academic reading and writing skills as well as 15 hours of note-taking and grammar skills per week.
Level C consists of 21 hours of writing, listening and grammar skills with an addition of 9 hours of reading skills per week.
Assessment in the English Preparatory Programme:
In order for students to be considered successful, they have to achieve a minimum score of 60 out of 100 full points in the final exams and their GPA scores should not be less than 60.
The GPA for each term is made up of 5% of the students' participation in class, 5% of the quiz scores for that term, 30% of the mid-term exam score and 60% of the final exam score.
Make-up Exams:
Students who have not been able to take a mid-term exam due to an excuse accepted by the English Preparatory School Administration may take a make-up exam provided that they submit a documented excuse to the Students' Office within 7 days following the date of the original exam.
Students who do not take the make-up exam on the specified date cannot take it again. There are no make-up exams for final exams.
Failing the English Preparatory School:
Students who have not been successful within a duration of two academic years can freeze their registration so as to be able to improve their English language skills elsewhere. The registrations of students who have not achieved a passing score on the Proficiency Test at the end of this period will be cancelled by Yeditepe University.
