In this course the development of the Comparative Literature will be taught in its historical context with an overview of the French and American Schools. The two subbranches of the comparative literature, thematics and imagology will be presented.


CLT 525 Turkish Literature and Western Literatures

This course will elaborate on Turkish literature and investigate in what way and to what extent it had been influenced from Western literatures in terms of genre, structure and content.


CLT 527 Novel and its Worldwide Adventure

The development of the novel, from its emergence during the Middle Ages to the present will be traced. The contemporary novel and the phenomenon of the novel within Turkish literature will be studied from a comparative angle.


CLT 539 Turkish Literature in Translation

Which texts of Turkish Literature have been translated into foreign languages? Do they have anything in common? Why are some texts preferred for translation some not? What are the cultural traps of translation in general? Is there a difference between areal / local literature and international literature?

CLT 523 Divan Poetry and Persian Literature

This course will elaborate on the relationship between the Divan and Persian literatures. It will investigate the impact of the latter on Divan literature. It will then focus on the original works produced within Divan literature.


CLT 529 Postmodernism and Literature

  In this course the phenomenon of postmodernism will be studied through some Turkish and English texts, with a critical perspective based on the ideas of Lyotard, Barthes, Foucault and Said. 


CLT 531 Painting and Literature

A comparative history of art from 15th century to the present time. Following topics will be covered; European Renaissance and Baroque periods; discussion of wall carpets, frescoes and oil paintings. Art in Anatolian Seljuks and Ottomans; examples of tiles, miniatures and portraits of the Sultans. Modern approaches in European art, primitives in Turkish art, military painters, Turkish painting in the Republican era. The corresponding literary trends.


CLT 533 Short Story and its Worldwide Adventure

The literary genre of the short story will be studied through examples taken mostly from the English and Turkish literatures, but also from all over the world. Examples of short stories will be analyzed using contemporary methods.


CLT 535 Literature and Philosophy

The impact of philosophy on literature will be discussed. Main trends in philosophy and literature will be compared.

By focusing on examples this course will elaborate on the development of the tragedy from Ancient Greece to the present time. The concept of tragedy and its articulation outside the literary genre will also be investigated.

The art of the cinema generally makes use of original scenarios, but sometimes it also makes use of original literary examples. This course will discuss the positive and negative implementations of this phenomenon.


CLT 522 Mythology and Literature

The course will concentrate on the meaning of mythology. Its impact as an element within the Western and Eastern literatures will also be dealt with and mythological signs will be interpreted.


CLT 524 Image of the Turk in Foreign Literatures

The image of the Turk that was reflected in literary genres of poetry, drama and travel accounts in English literature in the 16th-18th centuries and its effects on the lifestyle of a particular period in history will be studied, after an introduction to the 1000 years of history of the image of the Turk in Europe.

Approaches, such as structuralism and semiotics, that had an impact on 20th century literary theories will be dealt with within the context of studies related to literature. Examples taken from the literature will be analysed through the application of these approaches upon them.

 Literary journals and literature supplements that are published in Turkey, as well as literature and culture programmes in the Turkish visual media will be investigated. Their publication policies will be examined through examples taken from current presentations.

                  


CLT 532 Music and Literature

The aim of this course is to question the links between music and literature. Both disciplines interpret the areas of syntagm, rhetoric and prosody in a similar way. This course will analyse the use of music in literature (on the example of Proust's works), the use of literature in the works of music (on the example of Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet), and the use of both disciplines within opera. It will further elaborate on the relationships between Milton and Haendel, Schiller and Beethoven, Goethe and Schubert, French symbolists and Debussy.
