Ph.D. DEGREE IN MATHEMATICS

Students accepted with M.Sc. degree must complete at least seven courses of at least twenty-one credits and a thesis work. In principle, none of the courses are compulsory. However, if the M.S. degree held do not compensate the compulsory courses listed above, the student may be asked to complete additional courses in areas in which his/her knowledge is weak. In such cases, students may be subjected to oral/written examination for proper and individual determination of their needs.

Students accepted with B.S. degree must complete at least fourteen courses of at least fourty-two credits and a thesis work.

In this program, students completing seven courses may transfer to M.S. program.

All PhD candidates are required to participate teaching activities of the department. The minimum amount of workload is determined and anounced by the Graduate School.

Qualifying Examination is performed on subjects determined by the department's graduate comitee in accordance with the courses taken by the student. This examination consists of two parts: (1) a written examination on the pre-determined subjects and on topics covered in six compulsory courses listed above. The amount of questions on the latter cannot exceed 30% of the whole. (2) an oral examination by the same comitee offering the written examination.

APPLICATIONS:

The programs are open to students from mathematics, science and engineering departments. Students holding a B.S. degree from a department other than mathematics are required to complete a preparotory semester in mathematics undergraduate program.

Students from other Instituitions may also apply after completing one semester succesfully in their Instituitions.
Applications are accepted by The Institute of Graduate Studies in Science and Engineering twice a year. For registration candidates should have
1. Application form (available from the Institute)
2. Copy of B.S. diploma
3. Two reference letters
4. Qualification record for English (an examination to be anounced by Yeditepe University during registration)
5. ALES record (min of 60 for MS and min of 70 for PhD)
6. Transcript

Scientific and language qualifications of the candidate will be the subjects of an interview with the graduate comitee of the department. Need for a preparotory semester for mathematics background will be decided. Degrees, reference letters and student's own explanations of his/her goals will be essential.
