Philosophy Ph. D.


AIM

The PhD Program in Philosophy aims to constitute an example for universities established by foundations and also create an opportunity for students in Turkey who wish to attend Ph.D. programs abroad in order to specialise in a particular subject.

APPLICATIONS AND ADMISSION
The candidates applying for the Ph.D. Program in Philosophy have to:
Hold a BA/BSc and/or an MA/MSc degree (either from a University in Turkey or from a University whose equivalence is authorised by The Higher Education Council-abbreviated as YÖK).
Have a minimum score of 55 points in ALES (Students holding a BA/BSc degree have to have a minimum score of 70 in ALES, in order to apply directly for the Ph.D. Program).
Qualify from the written and oral examinations of the Department of Philosophy.
Qualify from the Yeditepe University English Language Proficiency Examination. (To be exempted from the English Language Proficiency Examination, the candidate should have a minimum score of 237 from TOEFL or 7 from IELTS.) Those who do not qualify in the English Language Proficiency Test have to start education at the School of Foreign Languages.


REQUIREMENTS FOR THE PH.D. DEGREE IN PHILOSOPHY:
1) STUDENTS HOLDING AN MA/MSC DEGREE IN PHILOSOPHY:

The candidate is expected to fulfill the following requirements: 7 courses (not less than 21 credits); a minimum of 50 pages translation on a topic determined in cooperation with the advisor; qualification from two language examinations-one classical, and one modern language- at a reading level; pass the Ph.D. qualification examination; prepare a thesis proposal; write and defend a dissertation.
2) STUDENTS ADMITTED WITH A BA/BSC DEGREE:
a) Students with a BA/BSc in Philosophy: The candidate is expected to fulfill the following requirements: 14 courses in addition to the requirements above (not less than 42 credits- those who complete 21 credits may be awarded an MA degree, provided that they write and defend an MA dissertation); a minimum of 50 pages translation on a topic determined in cooperation with the advisor; qualification from two language examinations-one classical, and one modern language- at a reading level; pass the Ph.D. qualification examination; prepare a thesis proposal; write and defend a dissertation.
b) Students without a BA/BSc in Philosophy: The candidate will first be enrolled in the MA Program. The overall performance by the candidate is to be evaluated after the completion of a year in the MA Program. Following the evaluation, the candidate may/may not enroll in the Ph.D. Program, and has to fulfill the requirements stated for those holding a BA/BSc in Philosophy.
The Undergradute courses do not count for any credits to be taken at the graduate level.
